I’ve been receiving some messages lately, I promise I’m still alive and I have a few things in the works for the blog. I’m working on a Birds of Prey (New 52) review as well as some other things. I’m sorry I’ve been so inactive - remember when I thought that I’d have more time when I was out of grad school? Yeah, turns out that’s wrong. Work = AHHHH.
OK, so this is not a planned post or a carefully written and well-researched review, just me fangirling. I just finished Batwoman Vol 1: Hydrology (I mentioned to you guys that I bought it) and I just can’t contain myself with these Batwoman stories (you may have noticed that Batwoman has been my icon for a while now)! Hydrology collects issues 0 - 5 of Batwoman.
Out of all the New 52 comics I’ve read so far, Batwoman is by far the best in my opinion. Granted, I have not actually read a whole lot of the New 52 (meaning; I’ve kept up with certain stories such as Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey, and then read an issue here and there from other series), but these Batwoman comics just blow me away every single time. I first read Elegy a while back and have been looking forward to reading Hydrology. I was definitely not let down!
Kate Kane is without a doubt one of the greatest female comic book characters I have had the pleasure of reading so far. When you get to know her and her backstory, you understand why she is doing what she does. There is a purpose and a point to all of her actions, and they make sense when you think big-picture about her, her past, her family and what she makes of the world around her. She cares for the people around her, her family, her girlfriends, we get to know them and how she interacts with them, and it makes her so human.
Not only is she a fantastic character with a great storyline, THE ART IN BATWOMAN IS LITERALLY RIDICULOUS.
What is that you say? Use square panels like a boring person???
JH Williams III does the art, which is the most amazing comic book art I’ve ever seen. I was so blown away when I fist read Elegy and Hydrology has the same beautiful art and the amazingly creative use of panels (picture above is from Hydrology). I love the aesthetic of the comics, the dark, gritty, mysterious feel that goes so well with the storyline, it got me hooked. If you feel completely overwhelmed by the choices of the new 52 but want to get into something, pick up some goddamn Batwoman!
Now, lets get to the sad part. I’m so lucky for having just recently gotten into Batwoman. I still have 19 issues to read before issue 24, which is the issue where the creators left due to creative conflict with DC editorial. I am literally so invested in this character already, I’m probably gonna cry when I read issue 24. I haven’t heard anything about how the new creative team handled Kate, so it might still go on to be great. I hope. The point of this post still stands. Read some Batwoman!
On a final note: do not take this post as all I have to say on Batwoman. I will write extensively about Batwoman in the future. This is just a fangirl recommendation post from me. I will definitely be reviewing all of the trades and going more in-depth about the story and characters.
