” A new journey to be started. A new promise to be fulfilled. A new page to be written. Go forth unto this waiting world with pen in hand, all you young scribes, the open book awaits. Be creative. Be adventurous. Be original. And above all else, be young. For youth is your greatest weapon, your greatest tool. Use it wisely.” - Wonder Woman, Princess of Themyscir.

Get to know me meme - favorite female characters [1/5] - Arya Stark

Like a lot of other people on Tumblr, I love Arya. She is without a doubt my favorite female character (if not my favorite character, over all) on Game of Thrones (haven’t finished the books yet). She is quick, resourceful, intelligent, witty, brave - and yet at some points, fragile, sensitive, fearful and vulnerable.

What I love about Arya is that, even though she literally pretends to be a boy and expresses some dislike for “girls”, she is a girl and she is still a multifaceted character (not such a common thing). Even though she is a tomboy, she possesses characteristics that we would typically assign to the feminine part of the gender spectrum, and even though she is a female, she also possesses characteristics that we would typically assign to the masculine part of the spectrum.

This is what I want to see more - female characters written first and foremost as people, as characters (not defined by gender), who are real - meaning, they are not a one-dimensional stereotype and they have more complicated inner lives than can be described in one single sentence. This is essentially my problem with the “Hollywood strong female character” concept. Just because you take a female character and give her a weapon and make her fight some bad guys, that doesn’t automatically make a good or a strong female character. A strong female character is a character with dimensions - like Arya - she is dynamic.

I also really love Daenerys, but since I want to keep this a bit varied, I’m sticking to one character from each medium, so…foregive me, Khaleesi.

Remarkable ‘Game of Thrones’ Illustration of Daenerys Targaryen by Sam Spratt

So, I kind of promised myself that I wouldn’t do a doctorate yet, if ever at all….. and then a really interesting, relevant-to-my-interests research idea comes to mind while browsing tumblr late at night and the only way I can think of actually performing the study is….a fucking doctorate.

Oh dear god, help me.

"People don’t like her because it’s the making of her, right now. When she, sometime soon in the future, becomes this person that she’s been kind of building up to, for the past three seasons, now four, then people will really begin to root for her. I think even the audience doesn’t realize she’s such a dark horse. If she acted badass and tried to kill everyone there, she would be dead by now! She’s so intelligent, and I can’t stress that enough. Courtesy is a lady’s armor. She’s using her courtesy to deceive people, and she’s using her former self as a facade, and it works so much to her advantage, because people still think she’s this naive, vulnerable, little girl, and she’s really not. She knows exactly what she’s doing. She knows what game she’s playing! And no one else does. And she’s learned from the best — Cersei, Margaery, Tyrion, Littlefinger, even Joffrey. She’s learned so much from these people, and they don’t even realize it. They’re unwittingly feeding her to become this great kind of manipulator. King’s Landing can either make or break a person, and in Sansa’s case, it’s making her."

Get to know me meme -  favorite movies [1/5] - The Nightmare Before Christmas

With almost all the other categories in the get to know me meme, I had to really concentrate before I could even think of something, but this one is a no-brainer. I don’t think I’ve seen any other movie as often as I’ve seen The Nightmare Before Christmas.

When I was a kid, Christmas day was about staying in my pyjamas until late afternoon, sneaking into my grandmother’s pantry to grab a few too many cookies and then head off to the TV room to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, which was broadcast every Christmas at around noon. I got to watch TV pretty much unsupervised since my grandparents were busy cleaning, cooking and baking and my mother was usually very tired since she (at the time) used to work a lot. So, nobody actually knew what I was watching all day and I remember one year when my grandmother saw a glimpse of it, gasping, "what horror movie are you watching??!".

Ever since, it has become a tradition of mine to watch this movie around Christmas. As I got older and started getting into the whole “Halloween party” thing (we don’t actually celebrate Halloween here, so it’s mostly just an excuse for grown-ups to dress up and get drunk), it has also become tradition to watch it around that time. So, I watch this movie (at least) twice a year.

There is something so frightful and eerie about this movie, but at the same time, endearing, sweet and wonderful. The music, of course, is amazing. Visually, the stop-motion animation is brilliant. For me, it’s nostalgic and it’s a treat to watch every single time.

I will probably not make much original artwork for this - if you know me at all, you’ll know that isn’t exactly my strong suit. I will however compensate by talking a little bit about each choice and why it’s one of my favorites. I will not do these in order, be warned.
